As your children begin to develop their phonic skills they will be learning that words are made up of sounds and that each letter represents a sound. You can help your child to 'hear' these sounds by emphasizing the first sound in familiar words, like cat, dog, nut etc. When you are reading ask your child if they can find something in the picture that starts with a sound. e.g. "can you find something that starts with a 'm'. Please help your child by saying only the sound of the letter rather than saying 'muh'. Below is a link to a song which will help your child to pronounce each letter sound correctly.
You can also help your child by pointing out the first letter in familiar words as you read them. Please use the sounds listed on the reading card.
