Ask your child to count a group of objects. Can they show you that number on their fingers? Ask if they know what 1 less is? How could they show you this? Discuss what happens to the number: is it more or less than the number we started with. Repeat for different numbers. Give your child a number. Ask them to represent that number by drawing, now take one away. How many do we have left? Encourage children to use subtraction vocabulary when talking about what they have done.
