Diverse Reading Suggestions
Below are a list of age appropriate suggested reads which help to celebrate the diversity in our community and wider world. Many of these books are available around school but are also available through book stores and amazon should you wish to have copies at home. At the bottom of this page there are a list of 'Read Alouds' which celebrate diversity all of which are suitable for KS1 children.
Reception, Year 1 and Year 2:
Hats of Faith
This is a Read Aloud story of the book 'Hats of Faith' written by Medeia Cohan and Illustrated by Sarah Walsh.
Just Ask
This is a read aloud book written by Sonia Sotomayor and illustrated by Rafael Lopez. This book is one of the most Inclusive Children's Picture Book every written; it features children from walks of life and uses some incredible metaphors.
What Happened to You?
This is a read aloud of the book 'What Happened to You?' written by James Catchpole and illustrated by Karen George. This book is about a little boy with one leg. The book aims to address how a person with a disability may want to be spoken to. The book also aims to teach manners and empathy as well as celebrating differences.
Maddi's Fridge
With humor and warmth, this children's picture book raises awareness about poverty and hunger!
The Big Umbrella
This is a read aloud called 'The Big Umbrella'. This book is about friendship, inclusiveness, and shelter from the rain. This red umbrella likes to help, likes to give people shelter, and likes bringing people together.
Lotus & Feather
This book filled with beautiful live illustrations, aims to teach children about treating each other kindly. The book follows a little girl called Lotus, who after suffering a winter illness, was left without a voice.
