The 2014 Primary National Curriculum states:
“The need to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
British Values are fundamental principles that help shape a cohesive and inclusive society. These values are integrated into the curriculum at Benson C of E Primary School to promote a well-rounded education and prepare students for life in modern Britain. The five key British Values are:
- Democracy
- Definition: Democracy is about making decisions together. It involves listening to everyone's opinions and making choices that reflect the majority's view.
- In Practice: At Benson C of E Primary School School Council and House Captains are good examples of how children have used their understanding of British Values to elect representatives for them. These representatives work fairly to ensure that children are given broad opportunities that are fair and equitable within their school experience. Through our PSHE lessons, children develop knowledge of Britain’s democratic Parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain.
- Rule of Law
- Definition: The rule of law means that laws apply equally to everyone and must be followed. It ensures fairness and justice in society.
- In Practice: The school emphasizes the importance of following school rules and expectations and understanding the consequences of breaking them. This helps students appreciate the role of laws in maintaining order and protecting rights. Through our PSHE lessons, children develop an ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives, and to recognise legal boundaries and, in doing so, respect the civil and criminal law of England.
- Individual Liberty
- Definition: Individual liberty is about having the freedom to make your own choices and express your views, as long as it does not harm others.
- In Practice: Students are encouraged to explore their interests and express their opinions in a safe and supportive environment. The school promotes a culture where everyone feels valued and respected. Through our PSHE lessons, children develop a sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves.
- Mutual Respect
- Definition: Mutual respect involves treating others with consideration and valuing their differences.
- In Practice: Benson C of E Primary School fosters an environment of respect through collaborative activities and discussions that highlight the importance of respecting others' views and backgrounds. Through our PSHE lessons, children develop their understanding and appreciation of the range of cultures in the school and further afield as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain
- Tolerance of Those with Different Faiths and Beliefs
- Definition: Tolerance means accepting and valuing people who have different faiths, beliefs, and lifestyles.
- In Practice: The school celebrates diversity through religious education lessons, collective worship and specific diversity events. We have children who are Diversity and Equality leads who provide a voice for the whole school and lead on initiatives, such as Black History Month. Through our PSHE lessons, children develop an interest in exploring, improving understanding of and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity and the extent to which they understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.
Integration with School Values
At Benson C of E Primary School, British Values are woven into the fabric of the school's ethos and daily activities. The school's Christian values of Understanding, Peace, Forgiveness, Love, Kindness, and Wisdom complement and enhance the teaching of British Value. This holistic approach ensures that students not only learn about these values but also live them out in their interactions and relationships.
By embedding British Values into the curriculum, Benson C of E Primary School aims to nurture well-rounded individuals who are prepared to contribute positively to society.
