Special Educational Needs

'The school identifies pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) accurately. Appropriate targets are set to support pupils with SEND. These targets, with appropriate adaptations in class, help pupils make effective progress through the curriculum.' Ofsted 2025

At Benson CofE Primary we are committed to inclusion and to supporting all children to achieve their full potential. Some children may have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and require support that is additional to, or different from, the reasonable adjustments and high-quality teaching provided for all pupils. This may include targeted interventions, additional adult support or adapted resources in the classroom.

Children may be identified as having SEND at different stages, including through information shared on entry or through ongoing assessment and monitoring of progress. Where a child is not making expected progress, appropriate support and further assessment will be put in place to determine their needs. Our approach is needs-led, not diagnosis-led; a child does not need a formal diagnosis to receive SEND support, and equally, having a diagnosis does not automatically mean a child will be placed on the SEND register. Decisions are based on whether they require provision that is additional to or different from that normally available.

We comply with the Special Educational Needs and Disability Code of Practice (2014) in the identification and monitoring of children with SEND (see our SEND Policy and SEND Information Report for further details). If a child is identified as having SEND, parents/carers will be informed and involved at all stages.

If you have queries or concerns about SEND these should be discussed with your child’s class teacher in the first instance. Teachers may seek advice from our Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo), Mrs Maritza Agudelo. She can be contacted via the school office on 01491 202502. The school governor with responsibility for SEND is Sara Ogden and she may be contacted via the school office.
